Kelly Osbourne Wants To Retire The Word ‘Tranny’

Kelly Osbourne did an interview with Glamour UK about three weeks ago where she expressed anger at her ex-fiance Luke Worrall for cheating on her with a pre-op transgender (pictured left). The comments were as follows:

“Everyone kept telling me that Luke was cheating on me, but I never believed them. It’s hard enough to get your head around someone cheating on you, but when someone is a chick with a dick? Up until then, I’d always thought that the worst way to get cheated on would be with an ugly girl. Don’t you think?”

She came under fire by transgender/LBGT advocates because of the word “tranny.” Now, I find this very confusing because I think the word “tranny” is not really a big deal, depending on the person saying it, that is.

I seem to recall Tyra Banks using it many times on ANTM and never got in any trouble from it. Lucas Silveira of The Cliks uses it too, on Facebook with a hashtag. #trannyproblems
Anyway, Kelly wrote an apology of sorts on Huffington Post, entitled “I’m Retiring The Word ‘Tranny’…Will You Join me?” She also went out of her way to mention that nobody made her write it, and that it is “her duty” to correct the mistake.

“As a lifelong LGBT ally and friend, I feel it is my duty to not only apologize for my wrong but to also correct it. The word “tranny” is a derogatory and hurtful word. I was completely ignorant to this and soon came to realize most of my peers and LGBT friends are, too.”

“This is a word I will no longer use or allow. It wasn’t until I googled it after speaking with GLAAD that I found out just how unbelievably offensive it was. When friends jokingly called me that in the past, I took it as a compliment or a joke, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.”

Oh my lord, I think I’m more a fan of Chelsea Handler’s route. Never apologizing for anything you say as a comedian or figure in the entertainment world is admirable to me. Especially since no apology feels sincere anymore, with everyone’s publicists forcing their clients to backtrack on things they obviously meant to say.

I believe that Kelly Osbourne feels bad for upsetting the transgendered/gay community, but she’s a huge supporter of theirs so they should be a little more willing to let it slide. Her goddamn boyfriend cheated on her with a guy, that’s tough.

[P.S. This is my way of saying I will never apologize for my jokes…I love the gays but I will not retire the word “tranny” with Kelly Osbourne. It’s just too fun to say. Like “chola” or “thundercunt”]
