A user named Rusty Foster recently complained of the Facebook flaw that is probably affecting many other account-holders, especially those with prank-loving pals.
“Facebook thinks I’m dead. I’m tempted to just let it,” Foster wrote. “Did you know that you can report any of your Facebook friends dead & Facebook will lock them out of their account with no evidence needed?”
Buzzfeed caught wind of the story and quickly presented readers a few steps to faking a friend’s death without their immediate knowledge.
1. Fill out a memorial request form, which clearly states “Under penalty of perjury, this form is solely for reporting a deceased person’s timeline to be memorialized.”
2. Create a fake obituary using WordPress OR find a link to the obit of a deceased person (of any age or location) with a similar name to use as “proof of death.”
3. Sit back and sadistically watch them and everyone they know freak out. (I suggest doing this to anyone with particularly annoying posts about their meals, kids, pets or bra size.)
