Faith No More’s Opening Band ‘Christeene’ Blows In The Best Way Possible

Christeene Faith no moreI had the good fortune of seeing ’90s alt-rock hitmakers Faith No More on the third date of their North American tour in Portland, OR last night and would like to take a second to describe what I saw.

Before arriving, my friend/ex Scott informed me that a really strange drag queen band called Christeene was opening up for them, but “really strange” doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Handpicked by openly gay FNM keyboardist and Imperial Teen founder Roddy Bottum, Christeene was conceived at an queer open mic show in Austin, TX by Paul Soileau, the man behind the butt-baring fishnet stockings.  Continue reading “Faith No More’s Opening Band ‘Christeene’ Blows In The Best Way Possible”

Ellie Goulding And Taylor Swift Are Getting Drunk Together While Everyone Else Drinks Tea

Ellie Goulding Taylor Swift Selena Gomez HaimDancing Man fan Ellie Goulding (really loving “Outside” and “Heavy Crown” right now), Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and members of the indie/rock group Haim had an epic all-celebrity girl tea party today, except someone wasn’t drinking tea.

Two someones, actually…

As you can see, Ellie and bestie/Taylor Swift, giggling in the corner and mowing down on some alcohol.

I wonder how Coke would feel about Taylor enjoying rum with their product?

This R&B Cover of ‘Do You Want To Build a Snowman’ is Absolutely Spectacular

STOP contemplating spending your bad day watching videos of dancing lambs and monkeys bothering cats and listen to the folky/R&B version of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” in all its glorious smile-inducing cuteness.

Yes, The Voice Australia semi-finalist Fatai just released her full rendition of the song everyone – even people who miraculously haven’t seem Frozen – are singing regardless of it being summer and there not being access to snow in most parts of the country.

Beyonce is surely jealous of all this note-stretching soulfulness, wondering why she didn’t come up with this for the sing-Blue-Ivy-to-sleep mixtape.  Continue reading “This R&B Cover of ‘Do You Want To Build a Snowman’ is Absolutely Spectacular”

Interview: Soulful Singer/Songwriter Jen Miller

This month, brilliant indie vocalist, ukulele master and all-around musical badass Jen Miller – representing Columbus, Ohio – tolerates my line of questioning for the second time around.

She covers the recording process, Kickstarter, her favorite bands, The Red Wedding, her quirky but beloved fans, how she’s grown as an artist and more. Read on, dinosaurs…

It’s been two years since you released your first EP on iTunes, what do you think the major difference between your new album, Overgrown, and Forget the Dirty Hearts is?

I think the major difference between the EP and the album is that I really got my hands dirty here. For the first EP, it was my first time in the studio. We did it all in one weekend and the songs didn’t really have a chance to ripen in the studio…we just recorded them as quickly and as well as we could in one 48 hour weekend.

This time around, I worked with a producer, Derek Snowden, who really helped me push my sound. Some days I would come in the studio and be like “Derek, I wrote a song last night! Let’s see what we can make of it!”, and that’s what we would do for the night. It would come in as vocals and a ukulele and get transposed to electric and banjo by the end of the night. That’s just how it goes. So the sound is definitely more developed and the songwriting more solid.

Kickstarter and YouTube seem to have been your friends over the years… What projects have you backed on Kickstarter?

Kickstarter burnt an imaginary hole in my pocket for a second there. I actually found it thanks to Julia Nunes…I am a massive fan of hers and she and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole are the combined reason I started teaching myself uke. She crowdfunded her first 2 albums which I (of course) backed obsessively.

Who are you into of these days musically? Anyone you fangirl over who readers might not have heard of?

I AM FANGIRL CENTRAL. A little less crazy than the One Direction fans though. I riot less.

Huge fan of Ohio natives Twenty One Pilots…Allen Stone, Kate Nash (swoon), Ed Sheeran’s new album, Nina Nesbitt, Passenger and Stu Larsen.  Continue reading “Interview: Soulful Singer/Songwriter Jen Miller”

Video: Jenny Lewis – “Just One of the Guys”

Indie Folk songstress Jenny Lewis is promoting her first album in forever with a music video featuring two hated big name actress and one lesser known, less hated one.

Brie Larson wins the cutest-girl-in-bad-wankster-drag award while Kristen Stewart AND Anne Hathaway both miraculously manage to look exactly like Tina Fey in an SNL skit.

Lewis’ third solo album, The Voyager, drops July 29. She’s also opening for Beck on a handful of North American tour dates. (To me, she’ll always be Rita from Foxfire.)

Wonderful Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is a HORRIBLE Dancer

There are a few locations and events where you are guaranteed to see a celebrity, and one of them is Coachella…

This is probably because so many of them were probably conceived at music festivals, it’s like salmon coming home to spawn. People like Lindsay Lohan and Vanessa Hudgens swimming towards massive piles of MDMA to the tune of Zedd’s “Clarity.”

This year, famous folk with freshly bleached buttholes wore properly Bohemian getups to the desert to see the likes of Outkast, Skrillex and Lorde. A wise woman with a camera caught none other than Leonardo DiCaprio dancing to his personal ear poison of choice, MGMT, on Saturday and he may just be worse at dancing than John Travolta is at pronouncing names.

George Bernard Shaw once said, “Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire.” So that explains why Gisele left. And Bar Rafaeli. And Anne V. And that other lady…

Video: Foals – “My Number”

Foals’ “My Number” video directed by go-to guy Dave Ma (The Horrors, Fair Ohs) was filmed in Miami with the usual but limited onstage scenario plus three random hip-hop dancer ladies.

Here’s an exact account of events…. 2:40: Music fades for outdoor dance routine. 3:00: You forgot your 3D glasses. 3:54: Dancers end up inside and steal the show from stargazing Brits. Continue reading “Video: Foals – “My Number””

Video: Veronica Falls – “Teenage”

The video for “Teenage” by Veronica Falls is charmingly low-budget and slightly frightening because it reminds me of those Super 8 movies Ethan Hawke obsesses over in Sinister.

The British indie band’s second album, Waiting For Something To Happen, comes out in February.

Video: Solange – “Losing You”

For once, being the underappreciated sibling of a massively famous pop star has worked out for someone. Yes, Beyonce’s sister Solange is cool as hell.

Her hair is real, she dresses like edgy urkel, sings like it’s the 80s and collaborates with indie favorites like Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) and rapper Theophilus London (check out “Flying Overseas”).

Video: Metric – “Breathing Underwater”

I can tolerate the laziness of a concert footage music video when it’s by my favorite band. And Metric is just that. What I really like about them is their staying power and willingness to evolve.

“Breathing Underwater” was a predictable single – it’s catchy and just broody enough to possibly capture the attention of the glittery hipsters.  Continue reading “Video: Metric – “Breathing Underwater””

Video: Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra – “Do It With A Rockstar”

Until today, I didn’t have a clue who Amanda Palmer was. But that’s not entirely true because I’m a Dresden Dolls fan (“Coin-Operated Boy,” “Good Day”), enough of a fan to have seen them in concert, but not enough of one to know that Palmer is one-half of the duo and lead vocalist.  Continue reading “Video: Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra – “Do It With A Rockstar””

Taylor Swift Removes Hipster Testicles With Rusty Acoustic Guitar Strings

In an interview with The Guardian Taylor Swift talks about all the things you’d expect her to talk about – fairy tales, boys, youth, and hipsters.

She tells the publication that the line “And you, will hide away and find your piece of mind with some indie record that’s much cooler than mine” from “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is inspired by a guy who despised the mainstream.

That was the most important line of the song. It was a relationship where I felt very critiqued and subpar. He’d listen to this music that nobody had heard of … but as soon as anyone else liked these bands, he’d drop them. I felt that was a strange way to be a music fan. And I couldn’t understand why he would never say anything nice about the songs I wrote or the music I made.  Continue reading “Taylor Swift Removes Hipster Testicles With Rusty Acoustic Guitar Strings”

Terry Richardson Makes Oprah Look Crisp for Harper’s Bazaar

Titty-loving photographer Terry Richardson gives Oprah the signature high-contrast treatment for Harper’s Bazaar. Unlike his angles of Kate Upton, Richardson makes Oprah look like a strong, powerful cup of joe with bright tailored suits and plenty of eye contact.

Oprah even gave the signature Terry “thumbs up” which … sends the wrong message. For those of you who don’t know, Terry Richardson is not only a great photographer but a total molester creep. The thumbs up says the most influential woman in the world endorses Terry Richardson, the world’s most notorious hipster pervert. But in O’s defence she probably has no idea since C grade tabloid fodder isn’t allowed 40 feet from her retina.

Fiona Apple Will Go To Jail For At Least Two Years

Because possessing hash in Texas is a third-degree felony, Fiona Apple faces up to 10 years in jail after her arrest on Wednesday for having four grams on her tour bus (big surprise, the lady with the octopus on her head likes THC).

A third-degree felony in the lone star state gets you at least two years in prison and a maximum of 10, according to the penal code.

Apple was busted in Hudspeth, the same county where Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg were detained. At a concert on Friday in Houston at  Bayou Music Center, she attempted to explain what happened.

Lana Del Rey Gives British GQ Her Body In Exchange For ‘Woman Of The Year’ Title

Lana Del Rey shares the cover of British GQ’s 15th Annual Men Of The Year Awards issue with four people. She has the obvious distinction of being the only one with ovaries, ovaries she almost displays in a naked, leg-hugging embrace.

Tinie Tempah, comedian James Corden Robbie Williams, and silver fox John Slattery (Mad Men) appear on the other covers [fully clothed] in tuxedos.

Turns out, it was neither the editor-in-chief or photographer who convinced seemingly reclusive Lana to wear nothing but blue jewels on her neck and finger. It was her stylist, Johnny Blueeyes whose “support and direction was invaluable ” in the production of her cover.

I thought OTHER people couldn’t keep their clothes on in her presence. Lyrical proof: “You can’t keep your hands off me, or your pants on” #NationalAnthem

Lana Del Rey For Vogue Australia, October 2012

Indie princess Lana Del Rey covers Vogue Australia‘s October issue. Though I have not read the whole interview, VA’s website says Lana “reveals there’s more to her than sultry videos, Americana glamour and a whole lot of hoopla.”

Who said Lana was full of hoopla besides people who got weird preconceived notions from watching Saturday Night Live and never realized her talent as a songwriter of beautifully ironic pop music (she’s currently working on a reissue of Born To Die, called Paradise). Other things learned from Vogue’s summary – she wears a mink coat as pajamas, loves spaghetti, chocolate cake, diamonds and fast cars.  Continue reading “Lana Del Rey For Vogue Australia, October 2012”
