Aja Volkman and Dan Reynolds: Best Rock ‘n’ Roll Couple Ever?

Aja Volkman dan reynolds Rising rock band Nico Vega have been busy touring in support of their new EP, Fury Oh Fury. In the past few months they’ve entered the iTunes Alternative Charts with “Beast,” partially in thanks to its use in the BioShock Infinite and Jack Reacher trailers.

“Many thanks to Imagine Dragons and Atlas Genius for an enormously epic tour. Feels like camp is over,” Nico Vega frontwoman Aja Volkman wrote on her band’s Facebook page along with a photo of her, her husband (Imagine Dragons’ singer Dan Reynolds), and their 7-month-old daughter Arrow.

The image of snarling, baby-holding Reynolds next to tilted, faux-screaming Volkman in leather pants is just sweet enough to make them one of the cutest, healthiest rock ‘n’ roll couple in existence.

Some might call Nico Vega a small band for their ability to fly under the radar, but you could never call their sound or vision anything but big.

The band (which I’ve seen four times at local bars and once as an opener for Metric) have undergone changes in 2012, like the addition of bassist Jamila Weaver and the birth of frontwoman Aja Volkman’s daughter with Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds.  Continue reading “Video: Nico Vega – “Easier””

Video: Queen Caveat – “Resilient Me”

Queen Caveat is a band based in Los Angeles featuring vocalist Lauren Little, Will Weissman on bass, drummer Jesse Magnuson and Ben Epand, brother of Nico Vega drummer Dan Epand, on guitar.

Video: Egyptian – “Fade” Feat. Dan Reynolds & Aja Volkman

Egyptian is one part Aja Volkman of Nico Vega and one part Dan Reynolds of the Vegas-based group Imagine Dragons. The two are a real life couple making music about the most universal subject you can think of: love.

This is more electronic, and much more melodic than what we’re used to from Vega and Volkman, yet it is welcomed. “Fade” is Radiohead’s “Creep” meets a Coldplay song that doesn’t make me want to puke.

Band Profile: Nico Vega

When you see Nico Vega in concert you forget that they’re not the biggest band in the world. You forget that you’re encompassed in a crowd of under two hundred people.

You feel that you are hearing Led Zeppelin’s guitar and Nirvana’s drums, while witnessing Janis Joplin’s stage presence.

After seeing almost all my favorite bands/artists in concert, the big names, and small – everyone from The Foo Fighters to The Killers to Lady Gaga to Sonic Youth, I’ve come to the conclusion that Nico Vega is the best in concert.
