Openly Gay Comic Book Characters, Latest In ‘Astonishing X-Men’

If I was a backwoods old timey conservative I’d say that ‘the gays have been infiltrating the media for years,’ and that it’s gone beyond just movies and television.

Yes, as if Queer As Folk, Will & Grace, The L Word, Brokeback Mountain, Skins, and Modern Family weren’t enough, there are homosexuals in video games (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, The Witcher 2) and comic books! Get the pitchforks.

Doonesbury (in 1976), Wonder Woman (1988), The Authority (1999), Batwoman (2006) and Archie (2010) are all examples of comics with gay characters.

In 1992 as a part of Alpha Flight, the Marvel superhero Northstar came out of the closet.

Baseball Horror Graphic Novel? Yes Please

Sullivan’s Sluggers is a graphic novel about a group of dysfunctional minor leaguers that end up playing an evening game against what turns out to be a group of gigantic hungry monsters.

The book is illustrated by James Stokoe and Eisner-winner Mark Andrew Smith. According to the project’s Kickstarter page, it’s “packed with shocks, gore, and screamingly outrageous humor, when America’s Favorite Past Time becomes one team’s ultimate nightmare!”

Doonesbury Pulled From Newspapers For Abortion Focus

Newspapers in several states including Oregon, Florida and Texas refused to print Doonsebury comic strips after the series focused on the topic of abortion for a week.

Obvious references to Rush Limbaugh’s “slut” comment and the two sponsors of the abortion sonogram bill (which would require women to examine their baby before termination) Sen. Dan Patrick and Rep. Sid Miller, appeared prominently.

In the comic, legislator “Sid Patrick” asks a young woman if her parents “know she’s a slut” after she mentions using contraceptives.  Continue reading “Doonesbury Pulled From Newspapers For Abortion Focus”

Kevin Smith’s AMC Reality Show ‘Secret Stash’

Remember when all AMC was good for was Halloween movies once a year and then 364 days of Clint Eastwood westerns?

Well, things have changed. The network AMC now proudly boasts the three most critically acclaimed shows on cable television – Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Walking Dead.

They’re now adding a new show to their lineup, in a much different direction. A reality show produced by director/nerd/hockey fan/comedian Kevin Smith. (Mallrats, Clerks)

The show is called “Secret Stash,” and is going to offer a detailed look into Smith’s real-life comic book shop, Jay And Silent Bob’s Secret Stash in Red Bank, New Jersey.

30 Mermaids In Pop Culture

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

After watching Lady Gaga’s “You & I” video, and remembering the horrible animation sequence from Ke$ha’s “Your Love Is My Drug” in which she turns into the exact thing she smells the most like…

I wanted to make a fairly comprehensive list/slideshow of all the significant mermaids I could think of (and research) in pop culture.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid, sparked a craze in the late 80’s, one that grabbed our attention from then on… Therefore making me want to present you with a shit ton of mermaids, well, 28. Best I can do.

Let me know if I forgot anything. Besides the Cher/Christina Ricci/Winona Ryder movie from 1990 that is sadly not about mermaids, even though it’s amazing. I’m still hoping for mermaids to replace vampires as sexiest and most prevalent mythical creatures of 2011/2012.

[Up where they walk, up where they run…]

New Superman AND Catwoman Costumes Revealed!

Costumes have recently been revealed for the two biggest upcoming comic book movie releases, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (due Summer 2012) and Zach Snyder’s remake of Superman, Man Of Steel, due out in 2013.

The changes to the Superman suit are very subtle or non-existant. The only real difference is the lack of signature curly-q hair string.

The true shocker comes from the new Catwoman outfit, which is too complicated and space-agey for its own good(=bad), if you ask me and anyone else. But there is SOMEONE coming to the outfit’s defense, Anne Hathaway herself, who said,

“What I am happy to say is, if you didn’t like the photo, you only see about a tenth of what that suit can do. And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste.”
