I Refuse to Believe (or Care) that Mariah Carey Can’t Sing Anymore

The internet is abuzz with news that Mariah Carey has absolutely no ability to sing live after a disastrous televised performance at Rockefeller Center.

I’ll admit that the “true-ue-ue-ue” part of “All I Want For Christmas” sans music sounds like a downed bird being repeatedly stepped and unstepped on, but talent is not something you simply lose one day like a coin in a couch cushion.

I am of the slightly unpopular opinion that Mariah is the best female singer of my generation (suck it, Beyoncé) and would like to defend her honor by saying that she’s no dummy. She made it through the rain with multiple personalities, Glitter and a mustache in Precious. I say she’s pretending to suck so she can make another comeback.  It’s a brilliant business plan that you wish you’d thought of. Video: No Doubt – “Settle Down” Live At 2012 Teen Choice Awards

No Doubt has always been one of those bands that I love but have little desire to see in concert. Gwen Stefani with all her energy and style, excites about as much as Patrick Stump at a state fair.

I mean, this is colorful and fun with a few wavering ska vocals and out-of-sync guitar riffs but I’m still glad they’re back and am looking forward to Push and Shove (out September 24). Continue reading “Video: No Doubt – “Settle Down” Live At 2012 Teen Choice Awards”

Video: Jen Miller – Doo Da Doo (Live In Columbus)

Here’s Jen Miller (if you still aren’t familiar, read my interview with her already, slowpoke) performing her single “Do Da Doo” in Ohio for Spoonfeed TV‘s weekly Little Box session.

She almost sounds better live than on her EP, Forget The Dirty Hearts, if that’s even possible. Be sure to also check out her performances of “Steal My Heart” and “Forget Your Face.”

Taylor Momsen Onstage With Marilyn Manson (Johnny Depp Too)

For a second I bet you cocked your head to the side and widened your eyes a bit at that headline. This seems like a less likely threesome than Kevin Bacon, Neve Campbell and Denise Richards. But I KNOW, it was boring old Matt Dillon, so vanilla.

If you think about this pairing, it makes sense. Taylor and The Pretty Reckless are going on tour with Marilyn Manson, and Johnny Depp is a known part-time musician who contributed strings and drums to a cover of “You’re So Vain” off the new album, Born Villain, out in early May.

They performed separate duets with the shock-rocker, Momsen for “The Dope Show” and Depp on guitar for “Sweet Dreams” in L.A. for the 2012 Golden Gods awards.

Video: Taylor Swift – “Mean” (Live At The Grammys)

During one of his five Grammy wins Dave Grohl got up pointed to his heart and clowned an audience almost fully comprised of pop stars, DJs and rappers,

“The human element of making music is most important. Singing into a microphone, learning to play your instrument…it’s not about being perfect…It’s not about what goes on in a computer.”

Video: Anna Calvi – “Wolf Like Me” (Live Cover)

Holy shit, I don’t want to sound misogynistic but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a woman play guitar quite like this. All snarled and soulful. God, not only do I love this song, but I love this version of it almost more than its precursor, originally by TV On The Radio.

Foster These People…

I know I complain about almost everything and you all might be wondering at this point, what does this chick even like besides bad reality shows and Britney Spears? Well, a lot of things, but praise isn’t all that interesting.

I could praise Foster The People as the biggest indie band of 2011. I could tell that that I love their CD Torches and that my favorite tracks are “Don’t Stop (Color On The Walls)” and “Helena Beat” OR I could tell you that I’m becoming disenchanted with the band after seeing them on SNL…

Megan Fox’s ‘Halo: Reach’ Addiction

In an interview with Steve Weintraub of Collider.com at the Toronto Film Festival, Megan Fox dropped a mega bomb of nerd perfection upon the world. She’s ‘addicted’ to Halo and plays online constantly!

“I have Halo: Reach. I have a complete addiction to that game. It is sick. I play online mostly and [other gamers] have no idea. They make fun of my gamer tag too because it is funny. They are all a bunch of guys and it is clear that I am a girl so they make fun of my name, and they have no idea they are making fun of me.”

The Transformers/Friends With Kids actress also told Weintraub, that her go-to karaoke song is “Sweet Child O’ Mine…”

10 Bands That Suck Live

1. Fall Out Boy. ANY performance on Youtube of these now-defunct emo-pop rockers will prove to you that Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz should be called fall-apart-live-boy. It’s an open-ended nightmare of out-of-breath singing accompanied by mediocre guitar playing, out of sync bass and incomprehensibly bad drumming. I’ve literally seen little girls beating on buckets with spoons that sound better.

2. The Black Eyed Peas. Besides the fact that none of the four members do anything on stage except jump into the air and slap their hands together like those cymbal-banging monkey toys, Fergie’s range is horribly halted. Just check out their Superbowl performance. It’s a tragedy.

3. Ke$ha. It was proven to me finally on SNL that Ke$ha is mind-blowingly embaressing on stage. She lacks all of the charisma you experience when listening to her on CD, the robotic voice, the energy, it’s all gone in concert. All you’re left with is a blonde lion standing on stage in a spandex bodysuit that glows in the dark. Throw in some strobe lights for bad measure. It’s still not worth $60 dollars.

4. Blondie. The fact that some of the most memorable, most sampled songs belong to this iconic 80’s band doesn’t negate the fact that Deborah Harry cannot sing live, or that the band sounds looser than Octomom’s vagina. The songs “Call Me,” “One Way Or Another” and “Heart Of Glass” all play out like some above average cover band that you could see for free in a summer concert series in your local park (This is what happens when you sleep with your entire band, Debbie, no one can focus).

5. No Doubt. I love No Doubt and Gwen Stefani as much as the next person. The band is talented and so is Gwen but her live singing is really bubbly and awkward at times. She changes the whole original flow of the songs by “rapping” certain parts. In the end No Doubt disappoints in concert because you just expect so much more. Gwen needs to stop doing push-ups and focus on vocalizing.

Band Profile: Nico Vega

When you see Nico Vega in concert you forget that they’re not the biggest band in the world. You forget that you’re encompassed in a crowd of under two hundred people.

You feel that you are hearing Led Zeppelin’s guitar and Nirvana’s drums, while witnessing Janis Joplin’s stage presence.

After seeing almost all my favorite bands/artists in concert, the big names, and small – everyone from The Foo Fighters to The Killers to Lady Gaga to Sonic Youth, I’ve come to the conclusion that Nico Vega is the best in concert.

Weezer Does Live Cover of “Pumped Up Kicks”

Foster The People are huge in the indie/rock community right now. Their single “Pumped Up Kicks” has earned them two VMA nominations at the upcoming MTV music video awards in the categories Best Rock Video and Best New Artist.

The song has become such a sensation that famed overachievers Weezer recently covered the song during a live show in LA’s Pacific Amphitheatre. Check-ch-check-check-check it out!

Nicki Minaj’s Boob Fell Out On Good Morning America (Video/NSFW Pics Included!)

On yesterday’s taping of Good Morning America, Nicki Minaj, female MC of the year (because there aren’t any others) had kind of an actual Pink Friday.

It isn’t as shocking as the Janet Jackson nip slip really, and Ms. Minaj kind of made it funny by making one of her trademark crazy plastic barbie surprise faces when it happened, during the song “Where Dem Girls At.”

The video can be viewed on World Star Uncut.

Nicki has already suffered wardrobe malfunctions in the past, like during one of her Femme Fatale opener shows on June 23rd when her dress “broke.”

Maybe it was tired of being part of a cliche ploy to be one of the most eccentric, brightly-colored things in the world. Or maybe her booty is just the size of Saturn and the atmosphere imploded…
