R.I.P. Nintendo Pioneer Hiroshi Yamauchi

The president of Nintendo passed away on Thursday of pneumonia at the age of 85, leaving my fellow nerds and I to mourn by the light of LED controllers.

Hiroshi Yamauchi, the grandson of Fusajiro Yamauchi, who started Nintendo as a playing card manufacturer, ran the company during its heyday in the mid ’80s all the way until 2002.

I’ll still never forget renting consoles (that was a thing when I was young, don’t laugh) and dying by mine cart jump fail in Donkey Kong with my brother, then getting a Game Boy for Christmas and searching for coins in bushes with Link and quitting Mega Man after two minutes in favor of Mario.

Video: Mario, Made Out Of 7,000 Post-Its

Some people have a lot of time on their hands. Thankfully, some choose to use it wisely. Like YouTube user FinalCutKing, who made a stop-motion video of Mario running on a wall using no less than 7,000 Post-It notes.

The Nintendo office throwback features guest appearances by Pac-Man and a few stray Tetris blocks… Guess he didn’t have the time to make Donkey Kong. Lazy.  Continue reading “Video: Mario, Made Out Of 7,000 Post-Its”

Real-Life Mario Karts, By West Coast Customs

Too many things to ask for as a Christmas present. First I wanted a white Nicki Minaj barbie, then a Shakira Live In Paris concert DVD, now I know for sure that I actually want a life-sized Mario Kart.

There are actually two, one modeled after Luigi’s bee car and one after Mario’s more traditional kart. Of course I want Mario’s, Luigi was never anyone’s first choice. These working models were built by West Coast Customs, displayed at the LA Auto Show in late November.

Teleporting Super Mario Bros Indie Game

Indie game developer Stabyourself (Maurice Guégan and Sašo Smole) are the brains behind a new project that combines the mirrored teleporting aspects of the game Portal with the retro familiarity of Nintendo’s original Super Mario Brothers.

Mari0 (with a zero) will be 100% free to Mac and PC users once it comes out, though the release date is currently unknown.

Guégan and Smole promise that,

“The primary maps will have a story and some portal-y puzzles,” And their catchphrase is,What if Nintendo teamed up with Valve and recreated the famous Mario game with Portal gun mechanics?’

The 20th Anniversary of Super Nintendo (Best of SNES)

Everybody’s favorite classic gaming console is the Super Nintendo, originally released in North America on August 23, 1991. The “Super Nintendo Entertainment System” abbreviated “SNES,” had/has the widest assortment of iconic games of any system to date not to mention evolutionary graphics for their time, plus catchier songs than anything on Top 40 radio. It was a lucky thing to own a SNES in the 90’s, they originally went for around $200 but lowered to $99 in their later years.

SNES is the 7th bestselling console of all time (2nd best of the 90’s after Playstation) and that includes all recent consoles, not to mention inflation. I actually remember renting a SN and a few games (usually Donkey Kong) at the video store in the early 90’s. Nowadays, it’s practically unheard of to walk into a video store let alone rent a game AND an entire console. Now we have Redbox…
