Super-Centenarian Attributes Old Age to Raw Eggs, Single Life

Emma morano CentenarianThe oldest woman in Europe and fifth oldest in the world, 115-year-old Italian-born Emma Morano tells the New York Times she believes she’s cruised through three centuries because of her diet, which has included three raw eggs a day since adolescence, and her decision never to remarry.

Morano has been living the single life since 1938, when she separated from her husband and forever decided she “didn’t want to be dominated by anyone.”

Amazingly, Italy’s famous super-centenarian refuses to ever go to the hospital. Continue reading “Super-Centenarian Attributes Old Age to Raw Eggs, Single Life”

Jaden and Willow Smith are the Most New Agey Kids Ever

Willow and Jaden look like Will SmithYou know that one friend you have that’s all about good “energy, “being “connected” and forcing weird food into your mouth and bad thoughts in your head? The one that makes you feel like you’re gaining and losing brain cells at a rapid and weirdly equal rate with their conspiracies on cancer being secretly curable and GMO corn being responsible for 9/11.

Willow and Jaden Smith are those people, except that they’re 14 and 16, which makes it even weirder than it already is. In an interview with the New York Times promoting Jaden’s music, the Smiths don’t sound like the children of Scientologists, they sound like the children of pretentious, brainwashed hippies.

The only thing that could “explain” the  interview is the Jaden line, “I have a goal to be just the most craziest person of all time.”

It starts out like this, with the simple question “What have you been reading?”

WILLOW: Quantum physics. Osho.

JADEN: “The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life” and ancient texts; things that can’t be pre-dated.

And then it gets odder:

WILLOW: I mean, time for me, I can make it go slow or fast, however I please, and that’s how I know it doesn’t exist.

And odder:

JADEN: When you think about an apple, you also think about the opposite of an apple. It’s a tool for understanding mathematics and things with two separate realities. But for creativity: That comes from a place of oneness. That’s not a duality consciousness.

And BOOM, your head explodes like a watermelon in a movie adaptation of Fruit Ninja directed by Michael Bay:

JADEN: Honestly, we’re just trying to make music that we think is cool. We don’t think a lot of the music out there is that cool. So we make our own music. We don’t have any song that we like to listen to on the P.C.H. by any other artist, you know?

WILLOW: That’s what I do with novels. There’re no novels that I like to read so I write my own novels, and then I read them again, and it’s the best thing.

And then your internal organs splat onto everything. Intestines on the window pane, liver on the kitchen tile, kidneys wrapped around the faucet while Willow and Jaden laugh sadistically because they’re too cool for novels and music…  Continue reading “Jaden and Willow Smith are the Most New Agey Kids Ever”

Olympian Tom Daley and Actress Maria Bello Casually Step of the Closet

In totally unsurprising and then slightly surprising news, Olympic diver Tom Daley and Maria Bello (played the wife in A History of Violence and replaced Rachel Weisz in the last Mummy movie) both announced that they are in same-sex relationships this weekend.

Daley – a Tumblr-favorite and teen icon in his own right – has had gay rumors swirling around him like a tornado since we first heard his name, but I’m less in tune (and therefore more interested) in the personal life of Bello.

In a touching article for The New York Times, Bello described a discussion she had with her 12-year-old son about romance. When she decided to tell him that her partner was a woman, he sweetly replied, “Mom, love is love, whatever you are.” Excerpt:

From left: Maria, Dan McDermott, Jack and Clare Munn

I loved him so much for saying that. “But Jack, I’m a little scared,” I said. “When I was younger, people judged you if you were in a romantic relationship with a person of the same sex, and some still do. So I’m not sure how to deal with this. But we’ll figure it out together.”

She went on to say that her, her ex, their son and her partner Clare live in complete harmony. In the piece entitled “Coming Out as a Modern Family,” she writes that they all have dinner together every night and carpool to soccer tournaments.  Continue reading “Olympian Tom Daley and Actress Maria Bello Casually Step of the Closet”

Angelina Jolie Had a Double Mastectomy

Angelina Jolie 2013Angelina Jolie explained her recent absence, revealing that she had joined the likes of Giuliana Rancic, Sharon Osbourne, Kylie Minogue, Kathy Bates and the tens of thousands of American women who undergo mastectomy a year, in a New York Times piece titled “My Medical Choice.”

Jolie wrote that the decision to have her breasts surgically removed and replaced with implants came after doctors learned that she carries a gene that heavily increases the chance of developing breast cancer.

In the heart-melting article, she describes the process, which began in early February and ended in late April, and encourages others to be brave and get tested.  Continue reading “Angelina Jolie Had a Double Mastectomy”

Secrets Of The Marijuana Catapult, As Told By The Former Chief Of The DEA

So I’m reading the “cocaine” issue of New York Times Magazine that was appropriately handed to me by my mom, not because I have a snorting addiction but because she hands all the issues down to me, and I notice something about a “marijuana catapult.”

Naturally I’m very intrigued, even as someone who doesn’t smoke pot anymore, it sounds like the most fascinating thing ever. Sadly blueprints and a point-by-point description were not included.

What we do get is an explanation that moving marijuana is hard for drug cartels because it smells and is bulkier than coke, but worth it. Due to the stench and weight it “tends to cross the border far from official points of entry.”  Continue reading “Secrets Of The Marijuana Catapult, As Told By The Former Chief Of The DEA”

Michelle Obama’s White Relatives, Circa 1884

On June 16 the New York Times posted an article delving into the first lady’s white lineage, an expansion of a piece titled “In First Lady’s Roots, A Complex path From Slavery” written in 2009.

Her exact relatives were revealed using DNA testing and research. Joan Tribble, a Georgia was pictured next to her great-great grandfather’s grave.  Continue reading “Michelle Obama’s White Relatives, Circa 1884”
