Is It Ever ‘OK’ For an Officer to Shoot an Unarmed Civilian?

Officer who shot mike brownThere are a lot of heated discussions surrounding the shooting of Michael Brown, the unarmed African-American teen shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri earlier this month (bringing back all-too-fresh memories of the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida).

While we have yet to know why Brown was shot, if there is a “reason” at all, we now know the identity of the officer and, thanks to an autopsy conducted on Sunday, the exact amount of times Brown was shot.

28-year-old Darren Wilson controversially put two bullets in Brown’s head and four more in his right arm while, according to witnesses and other reports, his hands were in the air, not holding or reaching for a weapon of any kind.

The incident has been a huge source of controversy for the nation and an absolute nightmare for the police in St. Louis, who are under even more scrutiny for tear gassing protestors, not to mention that the KKK are reportedly raising money in support of Wilson.

While everyone is wondering how and why this happened in the first place, I’m specifically wondering if there’s ANY circumstance where a member of the police force could shoot an unarmed civilian and not be ostracized by most of America. Another man goes on a shooting spree: Teen and police officer killed

James brown shooting victimsA man by the name of James Brown went on a shooting spree on May 31st.

As a result two innocent people were murdered. One a boy of 17 years and the other a police officer.

James Brown was reported to have started shooting randomly as he drove through Norfolk, Virginia.

Mark Rodriguez was on his way home from a celebration of his high school graduation when he was shot in his car. He was declared dead at the scene at the young age of 17.

A police officer was also killed when he spotted Brown’s car near his home. After they spotted the car, the gunman shot officer Brian Jones and Curtis Allison multiple times from inside his home. Allison tried to help Jones, who was shot multiple times. Both officers were taken to the hospital where Jones later passed away. Allison is expected to make a full recovery.

James tried to escape after killing one officer and injuring the other. He ended up crashing into another car when trying to get away. Police officers say that Brown resisted arrest and tried to take the policeman’s gun. He was shot by the officer who was trying to arrest him and pronounced dead at the scene.  Continue reading “Another man goes on a shooting spree: Teen and police officer killed”

I Don’t Live in Fear of Men, I Live in Fear of People: My Thoughts on Elliot Rodger and #YesAllWomen

Elliot Rodger yes all women“YesAllWomen” is trending at the moment because of Elliot Rodger – who fatally stabbed his three roommates and shot three more in the streets of Isla Vista – and I wanted to take a moment to say what I find unsettling about it without sounding completely anti-feminist.

Rodger blamed women for everything, and justified his crimes because of the way they treated him. Already rich and shallow (he was openly obsessed with his Gucci sunglasses and expensive car), he felt entitled to more. He wanted admiration and attention in the form of sex.

In a world where so many women with low self-worth throw their bodies at men in a misguided attempt to feel better about themselves, we forget that men sleep around for the same fundamental reason women do.  Continue reading “I Don’t Live in Fear of Men, I Live in Fear of People: My Thoughts on Elliot Rodger and #YesAllWomen”

Latest Ford Hood Shooter Had a History of Instability

Ivan Lopez shooterThe commanding general at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas – where 34-year-old enlisted soldier Ivan Lopez shot and killed three fellow officers and then himself with a semi-automatic pistol on Wednesday, April 3 – says Lopez had a questionable medical history that may at least partly explain his behavior.

“We have very strong evidence that he had a medical history that indicates an unstable psychiatric or psychological condition. We’re going through all records to ensure that is, in fact, is correct,” Gen. Mark Milley told reporters today, adding that they believe his condition was the “underlying causal factor.” (Not that you can ever truly “explain” murder.)

Sixteen were wounded in this latest Fort Hood shooting, a military base that was plagued by a similar incident in 2009 that left 13 dead and more than 30 injured at the hands of Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan.

South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius Shoots and Kills Girlfriend Valentine’s Day Morning

Oscar Pistorius girlfriendParalympic champion Oscar Pistorius, also known as “Blade Runner” and the “Fastest man on no legs,” was arrested today for the murder of his model/law graduate girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Police arrived at Pistorius’ home in Pretoria, South Africa in the early hours of Valentine’s Day, recovering a 9 mm pistol from the scene believed to be the murder weapon.

Early reports suggested that the shooting was an accident and the possibly result of him confusing Steenkamp for an intruder while she was attempting to surprise him for Valentine’s.

Authorities say they had been called to his house multiple times for incidents of “a domestic nature,” and TMZ has learned that Pistorius was arrested in 2009 for assaulting a female companion.  Continue reading “South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius Shoots and Kills Girlfriend Valentine’s Day Morning”

New Details on Adam Lanza and the Sandy Hook Massacre

Ryan Lanza current photo 1Ryan Lanza yearbook photoNew information about 20-year-old shooter Adam Lanza and his 27 victims was released today including the names of the deceased, a report from the Chief Medical Examiner, and descriptions of Lanza as told by classmates and neighbors.

Most who met or knew Adam said he was smart and quiet. The words “camera shy” appear in his 2010 high school yearbook in the place of a photo, which might explain why he did not have a Facebook page.

Former classmate Olivia DeVivo told the New York Times that the residents of Newtown “weren’t surprised” that he was behind the massacre because “he just didn’t really connect” with the community.

Another Elementary School Shooting, Another Day to Not Talk About Gun Control

Connecticut shooting 2012Nearly 30 people, including at least 20 children, were gunned down this morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut just three days after the Clackamas mall shooting in Oregon.

News outlets, politicians and the Twitter/Reddit/Facebook generation are bringing their boxing gloves to the table today either in favor, or against a forum on stricter laws regarding guns. In one corner, we have men and women who, at some point, felt threatened enough by their surroundings to “need” a gun or two to “survive,” standing by others from rural red counties who were taught to hunt and clean a rifle at age seven.  Continue reading “Another Elementary School Shooting, Another Day to Not Talk About Gun Control”

Oregon Mall Gunman Jacob Tyler Roberts Said ‘I Am The Shooter’ Before Opening Fire

Jake Roberts gun tattooNew details on Tuesday’s Clackamas Mall shooting in Oregon have emerged. The gunman, who killed two (not including himself) and put one in the hospital, has been identified as Jacob Tyler Roberts.

22-year-old Roberts carried a semi-automatic rifle (believed to be an AR-15, one of the same weapons James Holmes used in Aurora) while wearing a white mask and a bulletproof vest.

A witness/Macy’s employee told the Associated Press that Roberts, who eventually shot himself outside of the REI, announced “I am the shooter” before firing.

The three victims have also been identified as 45-year-old West Linn native Steve Forsyth (deceased), 54-year-old Cindy Ann Yule of Portland (deceased), and Kristina Shevchenko (hospitalized).

Missouri Mom Foils Son’s Plan To Shoot Up Twilight Theater

There’s nothing stronger than a mother’s love, besides a mother’s obligation to save hoards of innocent youths from her homicidal son.

A 20-year-old man in Bolivar, Missouri was arrested after his mom learned he had bought two assault rifles and was planning a similar attack to the one in Aurora (on a Breaking Dawn Part 2 crowd) and called the police.

Maniac-in-question Blaec Lammers was sitting around at Sonic when the fuzz approached him for questioning.

Besides the obvious tragedy preventing reasons, this lady is a hero because I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of people that would have made “Twihards deserve to die” jokes and because the average age of that audience is about 16.  Continue reading “Missouri Mom Foils Son’s Plan To Shoot Up Twilight Theater”

Jeffrey Ross Dresses Like Joe Paterno, Makes Aurora Massacre Joke

Instead of dressing up as Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky at the Comedy Central roast of Roseanne Barr, he wore the glasses of Joe Paterno.

The veteran insult comedian who was recently named the host of a half-hour show called The Burn with Jeff Ross, has stepped it up. He wore nothing but a leather jacket and revealing black underwear to 2010’s David Hasselhoff roast.

On this year’s getup, he cleverly told the Hollywood Reporter“If they’re offended by what they see, they can do what Joe Paterno did – look the other way.”

Dane Cook Makes Joke At Expense Of Colorado Shooting Victims And ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Dane Cook made me laugh in his Comedy Central Presents special from 2000. Since then, I chuckled at the movie Waiting… which he is in, though it was mostly at Anna Faris. He was also surprisingly okay alongside Kevin Costner in Mr. Brooks.

I haven’t thought much about Dane Cook since Mr. Brooks except that when Daniel Tosh made that crappy rape joke at the Laugh Factory I heard he was lurking in a shadow somewhere nearby.

Now that Cook is making untimely jokes about the Aurora theater shooting I can no longer ignore his existence as a formerly overrated comedian who was finally getting the amount of attention he deserved (barely any).  Continue reading “Dane Cook Makes Joke At Expense Of Colorado Shooting Victims And ‘The Dark Knight Rises’”

Christian Bale Is Capable Of Being A Nice Guy

Christian Bale popped up unannounced to visit five victims of The Dark Knight Rises shooting at the Medical Center of Aurora on Tuesday, all sweet and low-key in jeans and a t-shirt.

He spent two and a half hours at the facility, and snapped photos with several of the victims and some of the employees as well. One, Carey Rottman (left) posted the photo on Facebook.

“The patients were really happy to meet Bale,” hospital president Bill Voloch told reporters. “They are obviously big fans of his movies. They wanted to see Batman and were really pleased to see Bale.”

There Are People Who Think The Batman Shooting Was Staged By The Government

I have now written four articles relating to the Colorado shooting at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. It’s a sad and memorable story and perhaps more frightening to some because it is so easy to relate to.

We all go to the movies, and in terms of popularity, Batman is as much of a craze as Twilight or Harry Potter and has a longer history in film, TV, and comic book form.  Continue reading “There Are People Who Think The Batman Shooting Was Staged By The Government”

Christopher Nolan Talks Colorado Shooting

Christopher Nolan released a statement through his publicist in L.A. (he’s a dual citizen of the UK and U.S.) addressing the shooting in Colorado that happened during a showing of his movie, The Dark Knight Rises. The gunman, who reportedly referred to himself as “The Joker” to the police after his arrest, opened fire on a theater that was a mere 21 miles from Columbine high school. Nolan wrote:

“Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie.  Continue reading “Christopher Nolan Talks Colorado Shooting”

Neuroscience Student Kills 12 ‘Dark Knight’ Audience Members, Has Millions Talking Gun Control

Almost everyone who considered going, or did go to a midnight showing of Batman this morning just experienced a spine-tingling moment of silence and selfish relief.

At around 12:30 a.m., a 24-year-old UC Denver student wearing ballistic armor and a gas mask named James Eagan Holmes brought a machine gun to a Century theater in Colorado and killed 12.

Over fifty of the people in the Denver suburb of Aurora were injured, mostly from gunshot wounds, though some suffered chemical burns from what the police called a “smoke device.”  Continue reading “Neuroscience Student Kills 12 ‘Dark Knight’ Audience Members, Has Millions Talking Gun Control”

Woman Pepper Sprays 20 Wal-Mart Customers For Black Friday Xbox Sale

In the Porter Ranch neighborhood of Los Angeles, California a woman took notes from Occupy movement police officers when she pepper sprayed a group of people during a black Friday sale at Wal-Mart in order to get ahead of other customers during an Xbox sale.

The attack occurred at around 10:20 p.m. on Thursday just after the doors had opened for the post-Thanksgiving sales rush. The woman, who has yet to be identified though the footage was partially captured on an onlooker’s cell phone, harmed 20 people, all treated with minor injuries.
