Leighton Meester’s upbringing reflects the opposite of her uppity and entitled character on Gossip Girl.
In a way it must be even more rewarding to be viewed as a fashion-forward socialite, she was after all, born into a family with a heavy criminal record.
In the April 2012 issue of Marie Claire Meester reveals her family history, her views on marriage and her Hollywood beginnings.
All in all she may be the most surprisingly sensible young actress you can imagine, especially considering her background.
Her mother gave birth to her in a hospital while serving a sentence for drug trafficking and she was transferred to a halfway house for several months and later lived with her grandmother. (Her father also served drug-related jail time)
She lived in Florida, New York and eventually L.A. but it was at age 10, during a convention in Atlanta that an agent spotted her and transferred her to the big apple.
On her childhood: “My family has a crazy history, probably the craziest I’ve heard of. I look back now and I see it in a nice light, it wasn’t uncomplicated. But I played outside. I went to the beach. There were happy, fun times.”
“You can take what is handed to you and use it as an excuse to mess up. But I’ve always handled what was given to me by life. I consider myself lucky. I was never lied to. And I was loved.”
On relationships: “I couldn’t relate to kid stuff. ‘Jimmy doesn’t like me!’ Who cares? I was worried we didn’t have gas money or food. Those were my concerns.”
“I never had a boyfriend until I was 18, it’s nice, I guess – when you like them. But it isn’t the most important thing. I’m not sure I ever want to get married. The only time a relationship is good is when you really love them. I don’t want to hang out with some guy I just like.”
