Maybe I shouldn’t have so quickly condemned Obama‘s lack of initiative at a family dinner last month (word of advice: never say “balls” in front of your mom or brother).
Barack told ABC News that he officially is moving in support of gay marriage, something he was closed to during his first go at elections in 2008, opting instead for civil unions.
“At a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” he told Robin Roberts in a Good Morning America interview that will air later today.
He said that he was hesitant in the past because marriage ‘evokes very powerful traditions’ and ‘religious beliefs’ for so many. Of course, there’s the fear and possibility that this daring move may hurt his chances of re-election.
His competition is Mitt Romney, so I would assume and hope that it won’t hurt his chances enough to matter. Many people who already planned on voting for Obama can’t be anything but thrilled that he actually made a decision, about anything.
Don’t worry. As soon as the poll results come out showing he is now losing the race, he will issue a “clarification” of his earlier remarks that shows he really doesn’t think gays “should” get married because it will only cause an increase in the cost of divorce lawyers.
