Bert and Ernie Come out for Prop 8/DOMA Ruling

new yorker bert and ernie coverDOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) is gone and Prop 8 was re-passed in California.

I’m going to wait to celebrate until gay marriage is legal for over a year in Cali and for my gay friends to have equal rights in more than just a handful of states.

Personal pessimism aside, people are rightly excited.

San Francisco’s City Hall was lit up to look like a rainbow xylophone, Pajiba and other websites showed us millions of gifs and pictures of iconic gay couples kissing, and The New Yorker, well, they made Bert and Ernie more than just friends…

The cover, featuring the two puppets snuggling like the lifelong lovers we always thought they were, is in no way associated with or approved by the folks over at Sesame Street, who have always maintained that B & E are platonic buddies like Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly or Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

The image, “Moment of Joy” by Jack Hunter, is said to have originated on Tumblr years ago. Thoughts?
