Free iTunes Cards To Anyone Who Knew That Chumbawamba Didn’t Break Up Ages Ago

I’m guilty of liking a lot of bad songs, and many of them are from the 90’s. I can proudly say that none of them contain the lyric “pissing the night away.” That doesn’t mean I wasn’t surprised to hear that “Tubthumping” Brits Chumbawamba announced that they were splitting up after 30 years.

You know why I was shocked? Because I didn’t know they were still around or that they’d been making music for 30 years and had made 15 albums since the 80s. I have to applaud them for sticking with it, I mean, they had the one hit but it wasn’t exactly something to be proud of and they just kept trying and nobody knew.

Maybe they were happy and have some sort of cult following that I also don’t know about. Goodbye, familiar non-friends. I liked that one song from the Stigmata soundtrack, if it’s any consolation.

Video: Spirit Animal – “Lead!”

Spirit Animal are friends of Nico Vega and describe their sound as “90’s Red Hot Chili Peppers meeting LCD Soundsystem when, suddenly, both are karate chopped in the neck by Faith No More.”

“Lead” features popular clips (like smoking baby, and the 1954 Animal Farm cartoon) from all over and their DigiPunk/PowerFunk songs have been featured on Happy Endings and New Girl.  Continue reading “Video: Spirit Animal – “Lead!””

Video: Queen Caveat – “Resilient Me”

Queen Caveat is a band based in Los Angeles featuring vocalist Lauren Little, Will Weissman on bass, drummer Jesse Magnuson and Ben Epand, brother of Nico Vega drummer Dan Epand, on guitar.

Coincidentally, Lauren Little sounds an awful lot like Nico Vega’s Aja Volkman while the band is slightly Paramore. So if you don’t mind a little pop on the rocks with a side of emo, check them out.

Tentative Futures For Both Blur And Gorillaz

The only two people in the world that would be happy about Blur and The Gorillaz no longer making music are the Gallagher brothers.

You heard right, Damon Albarn may be calling it quits on both of his beloved bands.

He told The Guardian that Blur’s performance on closing night (August 12) of the Summer Olympics at Hyde Park in London will likely be their last. When asked if there would be future shows he said “no, not really” and:

“I hope that’s the truth: that that’s how we end it. I don’t know: you can write scripts, and they always end up going…well, one thing I’ve learned is that everything I think I’ve got totally sorted out, and I know exactly what’s going to happen, never works out that way.”  Continue reading “Tentative Futures For Both Blur And Gorillaz”

John McCrea Reveals That Cake May Disband Soon

On Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist podcast guest John McCrea, lead singer of Cake, talked about the band’s future. Or NOT future. After Hardwick said, “Congratulations for still being around after all these years,” McCrea responded:

“I’m doing okay, I still sort of hate touring a little bit but you know, I’m thinking about maybe dropping out of the music industry one of these days, I’m not sure when.”  Continue reading “John McCrea Reveals That Cake May Disband Soon”

Video: Summer Camp – “Down”

This London indie duo (Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey) gives us a Halloweeny clip for “Down,” off their album Welcome To Condale, due out November 8th.

[Random fact: Before Warmsley and Sankey’s identities were revealed, people speculated that Summer Camp was a side project from Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow]

A New Garbage Album Is Expected In March, 2012!

New music from Garbage is finally becoming a realization, nearly seven years after 2005’s Bleed Like Me, not to mention rumors of a full on break-up then a Shirley Manson solo contribution and more whispers of new material as far back as 2007.

Butch Vig and Scottish frontwoman Shirley Manson, who took a break to pursue acting (she played a bot on Sarah Connor Chronicles) plus bassist Duke Erikson and guitarist Steve Marker are bringing us their fifth album, which Rolling Stone just revealed is due in March or April of 2012. (We may see a single in December or January)

Video: Friends – “I’m His Girl”

Latest video from retro-hipster-tween-indie-pop up and comers called “Friends” are here with a song that does not include the lyrics “I’ll be there for you” and hand-clapping/Jennifer Aniston in a fountain, though it is on the East Coast. Watch it/listen anyway…

Band Profile: Nico Vega

When you see Nico Vega in concert you forget that they’re not the biggest band in the world. You forget that you’re encompassed in a crowd of under two hundred people.

You feel that you are hearing Led Zeppelin’s guitar and Nirvana’s drums, while witnessing Janis Joplin’s stage presence.

After seeing almost all my favorite bands/artists in concert, the big names, and small – everyone from The Foo Fighters to The Killers to Lady Gaga to Sonic Youth, I’ve come to the conclusion that Nico Vega is the best in concert.
